2025 Sustainability Trends

As we near the end of 2024, it’s time to look at the trends we will continue to see in the flexible packaging space. Sustainability initiatives continue to drive innovation in the industry with brands continuously looking at ways to create eco-conscious products. Let’s dive into five flexible packaging trends to look for in 2025.

Industrial Composting

One of the primary benefits of compostable packaging is its ability to break down in the end-of-life stage. When done correctly, products are biodegraded into natural elements such as water and carbon dioxide. Traditional plastics can take hundreds of years to disintegrate, so the concept of compostable products can significantly decrease the amount of waste in landfills and oceans. The challenge is that while industry composting is the most sustainable and efficient end-of-life environment, few consumers have local access to these industrial facilities.

Lightweight Materials

The use of lightweight materials in packaging continues to trend, in part due to reduced cost, accessible transport, and consumer convenience. They allow businesses to achieve more with less while still maintaining quality, durability, and room for innovation as we move forward.

Reduced Food Waste

When food is wasted, all the resources used to produce, transport, and store it—such as water, energy, and land—are also wasted. In addition, food that ends up in landfills emits methane gas. Packaging designed to keep products fresher for longer contributes to a more circular economy and, in turn, reduces carbon emissions.

Mono-Material Structures

Mono-material structures like polyethylene or polypropylene are simpler to recycle than multi-layer packaging through store drop-off programs. As technology continues to improve, mono-material designs are easily separated in existing recycling systems. This leads to more products being correctly disposed of and even provides benefits by simplifying the production process.

Educating Consumers

Rules and regulations surrounding recycling infrastructure are constantly evolving, along with the fast-paced evolution of technology. Because of this, consumer education is key to laying the foundation for change. It also helps the public make more informed decisions when shopping and choosing eco-friendly brands.
